TEM: EFTEM (Energy Filtered TEM)
Energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) is performed through a Gatan Imaging Filter (GIF Quantum SE) which allows the acquisition of images on a 2kx2k CCD detector. This equipment allows obtaining images in which only electrons of particular kinetic energies are selected using a slit of adjustable size. By selecting only the zero-loss beam, the inelastically scattered electrons are omitted which leads to a contrast increase on the TEM images. Elemental distribution maps can also be generated using electrons with a well-defined energy loss close to the ionization edges of the elements in the specimen.
