Service description
The main objective of the Thermal Analysis Service (SAT 907315) at IRNAS is to provide real simultaneous measurement of heat flow (DSC) and weight change (TGA) in solid samples. The analyses offered are very useful for the characterisation of both organic and mineral samples, widely used in the characterisation of materials, the study of soils, sediments, foodstuffs and quality control, also allowing the quantification of the fractions according to their thermal stability.
A). Thermogravimetric analysis (TG): Using a precision microthermobalance in a micro furnace with high sensitivity thermocouples that allows the measurement of the weight variation of a sample, compared to temperature or time, when a controlled temperature program and a specific atmosphere are applied. It allows working from room temperature up to 1500 ºC, with very specific heating ramps from 0.1 to 100 ºC/min. The atmosphere can be oxidizing (purified air or oxygen), reducing or inert (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon or helium). Accuracy and precision are essential, the microbalance has a resolution of 0.1 µg for high quality results. The double-arm configuration (Tare+Sample) saves time when taring samples, while the horizontal oven prevents oscillations due to heat flow.
B). Calorimetric analysis (called Differential Scanning Calorimetry- DSC): The TG equipment is coupled with a heat flow sensor (DSC), consisting of several thermocouples, which is calibrated with certified reference materials with a well-defined calorific capacity in the temperature range in which the scanning will take place. This allows exothermic (combustion) or endothermic processes to be detected simultaneously with the loss of weight, the exact temperatures at which they occur and the amount of heat absorbed or emitted.
The equipment available for the service consists of:
-Real simultaneous heat flux (DSC) and weight change (TGA) measurement equipment, Discovery brand. Model Auto Discovery SDT 650 - Simultaneous DSC-TGA.
-Automatic sampler of 30 positions.
-PC and TRIOS control software.
-Complete calibration kit.
The equipment that provides the service allows:
- Direct analysis without any prior extraction.
- Characterisation of organic materials, minerals and mixtures in complex matrices (such as soils and sediments).
- Detection of the degree of thermal stability (degree of cure, maturation).
- Quantification of the labile, recalcitrant and refractory fraction of organic matter. (carbon sequestration in soils and sediments).
- Detection of additives.
- Analysis of recalcitrant materials: cutins, suberins, kerogens, etc.
- Analysis of a wide range of materials including biomass, food, natural (biopolymers) and synthetic polymers, carbons, etc.
This service is available for groups and researchers from IRNAS-CSIC, other CSIC centres, universities and public and/or private companies.
