Underwater acoustics

The underwater acoustics group at the IEO (Spanish Oceanographic Institute) is currently developing various lines of research, primarily related to passive acoustics. Among the activities carried out, monitoring underwater noise stands out through a dual approach to the problem. This involves the development of theoretical models of underwater noise based on AIS navigation data and experimental measurements at strategic points along the 5 DDMM using instrumentation lines. On the other hand, the use of soundscape measurements provides the opportunity to obtain information about the presence of different cetacean species found in various locations along our coast. This line of research involves the use of semi-automatic detection algorithms created 'ad hoc' to extract patterns of presence, migration, or behavior of the monitored animals. The group develops its own recording systems.
