Systems Biotechnology

The group's main objectives are the study, comprehension, design, and management of microbiomes and the enzymes they contain in environmental, biotechnological, and biomedical research contexts. In environmental research, the aim is to characterize, understand, and utilize microbial communities inhabiting different ecosystems for biotechnological applications. In biotechnological/enzymology research, the focus is on identifying, designing, and developing new enzymes (both natural and artificial) and applying them in multiple areas. In biomedical research, the goal is to understand how diseases and treatments affect the intestinal microbiota, with the aim of identifying biomarkers for cancer prevention and other diseases. Additionally, the group positions itself in the realms of society, life, and matter, as well as their intersections, with the purpose of addressing society's challenges and promoting communication, dissemination, and open science.
