Marine Resources and Biodiversity in Central-East Atlantic (MARBIA)
The main research areas are the assessment of marine living resources of interest for the Spanish fleet in Central Eastern Atlantic waters, and the determination of biological and biogeographical parameters of the main target species in the area (Northwest Africa and the Canary Islands). We work on the modelling of fishery resources, prospection and biodiversity of coastal and deep-sea ecosystems, as well as the analysis of biological-fishery data for the sustainable management of resources in the artisanal fishery of minor gears in the Canary Islands and in the industrial fisheries (targeting hake, shellfish and cephalopods) of West Africa, are used. At the same time, taxonomic and bioecological studies of fish, cephalopods and crustaceans are carried out, as well as the analysis of daily growth in calcified structures. In the Canary Demarcation, we work on the implementation of the European Directive on Marine Strategy (commercial species).
