Interactions between Environment, Bioarchaeology and Society (IMBAS)

IMBAS is a research team dedicated to investigating the interactions between human communities and their environment. Through archaeological remains, we investigate how diet and livestock have changed over time, and how this reflects the different socio-economic systems and environmental management. IMBAS aims to understand the past to provide tools and empirical data to address challenges of the present day in resource management and food security. Our research is characterised by a multidisciplinary integration, especially of archaeological, archaeozoological, and biogeochemical techniques and methods (taxonomy, taphonomy, biometry, isotopes, dental microwear, statistical data processing with R, etc.). This allows us to offer new perspectives in the study of animal domestication, livestock management strategies (animal exploitation, reproduction patterns, diet, mobility, etc.), and the consumption of animal-based products as an element of socio-cultural identity.
