Group of Structure and Thermodynamics of Biomolecules

The group activity focuses on the study of structure-energetics-function relationships in biomolecules and molecular recognition processes of biomedical or biotechnological relevance, mediated primarily by proteins and/or carbohydrates, and their potential application to detect or control those processes. Biophysical techniques employed include microcalorimetry, analytical ultracentrifugation, spectropolarimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and the microarray technology, among others. Group strengths include i) a multidisciplinary approach for the characterization of the systems of interest; ii) pioneering research in structural glycobiology and biological calorimetry; iii) numerous external collaborations and involvement in consortia at national and international levels; iv) relevance of the lines of work (basic research with implication in Health and Biotech), particularly in relation to the Good Health and Well-Being goal (SDG 3) of the United Nations Development Programme.
