Service description
Total Organic Carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN). This technique provides total content of organic carbon and nitrogen in water samples. The Shimadzu TOC-V CSH instrument measures TOC following the principle of oxidation and nondispersive infrared detection. In the case of TOC previously sample must be oxidized to convert all forms of carbon to CO2. This oxidation is accomplished by injecting the measured sample volume over a catalyst which is at 680 ºC. Once oxidized sample is then treated and all water vapor generated removed. This drying is performed using a "Peltier" (device which cools the gas to 1.5 ºC) which condenses all the steam generated. Once gas is conditioned, non-dispersive infrared detection with dual detector cell is performed. The sample injection is automatized to ensure proper sample injection.
The detection module nitrogen TNM-1 allows to simultaneously measurement of both TOC and TN concentrations. The TNM-1 operates according to the chemiluminescence detection principle. Sample treatment, injection, combustion, etc. are all performed in the analyzer TOC-V CSH. During sample combustion, all the inorganic and organic nitrogen is converted to carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide (NO and NO2) in a steady flow rate. The principle of chemiluminescence is based on the reaction of NO with ozone (O3). In the reaction, the NO is oxidized to NO2 with higher energy level, and NO2 molecule releases energy as light. The detector measures the light intensity generated in this reaction which is equivalent to NO concentration. As the relationship between NO and NO2 is constant during the sample combustion, the obtained NO measurement is used then to calculate the total nitrogen concentration in the sample.
To determine the Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and Total Dissolved Nitrogen (TDN) with this instrument sample have to be pre-filtered with a glass fiber filter 0.45 µm.
The recommended minimum amount of sample is 40 ml for each variable. If an analysis of TOC, DOC, TN and TDN is requested, the recommended sample amount to provide is 200 ml sample. The sample must be kept refrigerated and delivered in a vial or sealed glass vial (consult with the Laboratory for details).
For samples with carbon content below 1 mg ml and/or saline water samples, the equipment requires, a special catalyst (in the first case) and a special treatment of the equipment after determinations (in the latter), which will increase costs. Therefore, these sample types will be analyzed when the number is high enough to offset these costs.
