Service description
This method involves studying the gas that is produced from a solid sample when it is heated without air (using helium) and undergoes thermal decomposition or desorption. The gases that are produced are analyzed in situ using mass spectrometry (MS). The sample is heated from 50ºC to 700ºC, with a constant temperature increase rate of 20ºC min-1. The gases produced are directed towards a mass spectrometer. This results in a chromatogram that shows the main areas of material loss from the sample and the average mass spectra that provide information about the chemical composition of the released compounds.
This method can be used for the characterization of various materials such as biomass, soils, sediments, synthetic or natural polymers, and organic contaminants in different solid matrices.
Instrument: Frontier Labs Pyrolyzer (3030i) with temperature range of 50-1100ºC and Agilent 5975B InertXL EI/CI MSD Mass Spectrometer
