Service description
The Natural History Collections Service (SCol) at IMEDEA provides specialized zooarchaeological and paleontological analyses for studying faunal remains from archaeological excavations and paleontological sites.
Our research focuses on:
- Taxonomic and anatomical identification using our extensive reference collection, which includes a wide range of Mediterranean fauna.
- Taphonomic analysis, examining site formation processes, post-depositional alterations, and evidence of human or natural modifications.
- Morphometric and biometric studies, allowing species characterization, variability assessment, and evolutionary trends.
- Age estimation, sex determination, and pathology analysis in fossil and subfossil vertebrates.
- Reconstructing past human-animal interactions, evaluating animal resource exploitation and management in archaeological contexts.
- Scientific documentation and the preparation of technical reports based on analytical results.
These studies are conducted within the SCol research infrastructure, which includes access to 3D scanning systems, scientific imaging tools, and comprehensive reference databases. The service is available to researchers, archaeological and paleontological projects, as well as institutions dedicated to heritage conservation and scientific research.
Requests must be submitted through the IMEDEA (UIB-CSIC) intranet or via the service website. For more information or inquiries, please contact us at servicio_col@imedea.uib-csic.es or avalenzuela@imedea.uib-csic.es
