Variety of bean: Faba Galaica (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)
Faba Galaica is a conservation variety obtained through individual selection within a local variety from Lourenzá (Lugo) in 2014. It is used in the Protected Geographical Indication “Faba de Lourenzá” as a base seed for its production.
- Market need
-
The market demands plant varieties that are resistant to diseases, stresses, climate change, etc., as well as the recovery of native varieties that are being lost due to lack of use and maintenance. Furthermore, the conservation and improvement of plant varieties contributes to the maintenance of biodiversity.
- Proposed solution
-
Faba Galaica is a native Galician variety of indeterminate growth (branching), with good early vigor and adapted to production in horticultural areas of Galicia. It flowers 70 days after sowing and the dry pod appears after 120 days. Its grain is extra-large, with white integument. It is a very productive variety (more than 4000 kg/ha) that belongs to the international commercial class “favada”. It has an excellent sensory quality, appropriate for fabadas.
- Competitive advantages
-
- It is protected by the PGI “Faba de Lourenzá”
- High yield with more than 4000 kg per hectare
- Great value on the market
- Variety especially suitable for fabadas and stews.
