Gender issues in research

The CSIC Women and Science Committee considers that the inclusion of gender and/or sex-related issues in research content is essential in many fields of scientific knowledge, such as the humanities, medicine, social sciences and engineering. The inclusion of the gender and/or sex dimension in research fosters better, more accurate scientific results and avoids adverse effects, as demonstrated by the Gendered Innovations Programme, carried out by the European Commission in collaboration with Stanford University and the National Science Foundation of the United States.

The Rome Declaration on Responsible Research and Innovation in Europe (Council of the European Union, 21/11/2014) establishes “the application of new knowledge in society- in full respect of gender equality, the gender dimension in research and ethics considerations”. This Declaration lays the foundation for the integration of gender and sex analysis into all phases of the research and innovation cycle. This implies that the biological characteristics and social and cultural characteristics of women and men are taken into account and that this inclusion is seen as an added value in terms of creativity, excellence and social responsibility, as well as return on investment. By contrast, incomplete and flawed results are the consequence of ignoring gender and/or sex-related issues, as these are a fundamental variable to consider in research.

Consequently, research projects and contracts should consider, where relevant, gender and/or sex dimensions, both in the approach, in the development and in the final results of the research.
