Carbonization and Environment

Carbonization and Environment

The research activity is related to the use of wastes and renewable sources as raw materials/additives in the context of a circular and sustainable economy and to optimizing the quality of coke for steel and foundry industries. The current line of research is the result of the orientation that, in recent years, has been given to the traditional one based on coal as raw material.

Advanced Materials and Processes for Heterogeneous Catalysis

Advanced Materials and Processes for Heterogeneous Catalysis

The group “Advanced System for Heterogeneous Catalysis” carries out research within the framework of the Sustainable Chemistry and Nanotechnology, with intensive use of nanomaterials of interest in three main fields : the physico-chemical study of powdered/film/membrane simple and, most often, composite materials with use in industrial-related energy (production and purification of hydrogen), environmental (automobile and pollutant elimination catalytic processes) and human health (chemical/biological decontamination of gas and water streams) areas.

Biocatalysis and Bioenergy Group (BBG)

Biocatalysis and Bioenergy Group (BBG)

BBG develops new selective biocatalytic processes using immobilized enzymes in both, continuous and batch reactors. BBG investigates the synthesis of hihg value products (food additives with therapeutic properties, structured lipids and phospholipids - rich in n-3 and n-6 PUFA- of emulsifiers, mono- and diacylglycerides, sugar esters, polyols, amines, alpha-hydroxyacids and biodiesel). BBG develops enzyme assisted extraction methods of bioactive compounds.

Biofunctional Surfaces

Biofunctional Surfaces

Our group studies surface biological processes using model systems and single molecule characterization techniques. We also explore the use of proteins for nanostructuring. The group has long time experience using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in liquid and in its application to study proteins. We also have a Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) that allows us to study quantitatively binding of soluble proteins to modified surfaces.

Chromosomal Dynamic in Meiosis

Are there link between human syndromes with physical and mental problems, a tumor growing out of control and the incapability to contribute to next generation? This question can be answered if we look at the biological functions of a protein complex, named cohesin.

Molecular Biology of Gametogenesis

Molecular Biology of Gametogenesis

The complex control of terminal cell differentiation producing gametes is mediated by regulation of gene expression interacting with multiple endocrine, paracrine and autocrine factors. Our laboratory is focused on the characterization of molecular mechanisms, through gene expression of both mRNAs and sRNAs (small RNAs), wich control and regulate the differentiation and development of oocytes and spermatozoa as well as the early embryos. Our currently study the role and regulation of genes involved in gametogenesis in both sexes and their contribution to zygotic preimplantation development.
