Biotechnology for Lignocellulosic Biomass
Plant biomass is a renewable source of chemical compounds and materials. In nature, fungi play a key role in its transformation and degradation through the action of complex enzymatic machineries. The Group of Biotechnology for Lignocellulosic Biomass at CIB aims to understand the enzymatic mechanisms involved in this process, and especially those responsible for lignin transformation in the plant cell wall. With the knowledge acquired, the group is developing useful biocatalysts for the industrial conversion of renewable raw materials, including the synthesis of bioplastics, thus contributing to the concept of Circular (Bio)economy.
The group is made up of three researchers, three postdocs and several postgraduates. More information (including ongoing research projects and publications) at: https://www.cib.csic.es/research/microbial-plant-biotechnology/biotechnology-lignocellulosic-biomass
