JAEPRE23 -02: Social norms and political preferences

The erosion of political and democratic norms has sparked significant debate in recent years, both inside and outside academia. In this project, we will work on social norms and their influence on expressing political preferences and opinions. These include the expression of prejudice, hate, support for the radical right, or authoritarianism among others. The project aims to study the mechanisms of how these norms emerge, change, are enforced or how they shape behavior. Social norms are studied across various social sciences, such as political science, sociology, economics, and psychology. Therefore, the project will speak to different disciplines. The project will combine a wide range of experimental approaches, from laboratory-based experiments to experiments conducted in field settings and survey experiments. Other methodologies, such as surveys or large language models (LLMs), can also be employed depending on the nature of the research question.
