Harmonic Analysis, Partial Differential Equations and Geometric Measure Theory

The origin of Harmonic Analysis goes back to the study of the heat diffusion, modeled by a differential equation, and the claim made by Fourier that every periodic function can be represented as a series of sines and cosines. In this statement we can find the motivation to many of the advances that have been made in this field. Partial Differential Equations model many phenomena from the natural, economic and social sciences. Existence, uniqueness, convergence to the boundary data, regularity of solutions, a priori estimates, etc., can be studied for a given PDE.

Geometric problems in PDEs with applications to fluid mechanics

There are many high-profile problems in PDEs that ultimately boil down to assertions of a strongly geometric or topological nature. One feature that makes these problems both very difficult and extremely appealing is that there is not a standard set of techniques that one can routinely resort to in order to attack them.

Climate dimension of natural halogens in the Earth system: Past, present, future

Naturally-emitted very short-lived halogens (VSLH) have a profound impact on the chemistry and composition of the atmosphere, destroying greenhouse gases and altering aerosol production, which together can change the Earth´s radiative balance. Therefore, natural halogens possess leverage to influence climate, although their contribution to climate change is not well established and most climate models have yet to consider their effects.

Integrated Catalytic Recycling of Plastic Residues Into Added-Value Chemicals

Integrated Catalytic Recycling of Plastic Residues Into Added-Value Chemicals

Approximately 70% of European plastic waste (18.5 mt/year) is not being recycled due to technical or economic reasons and are thus sent to landfill (27%) or incinerated (42%). This situation affects negatively the environment in terms of pollution and greenhouse gases emissions, as well as social perception regarding waste management, consumer’s products industry and policy makers. iCAREPLAST addresses the cost and energy-efficient recycling of a large fraction of today’s non-recyclable plastics and composites from urban waste.

Towards industrial applicability of (medium C) nanostructured bainitic steels

Towards industrial applicability of (medium C) nanostructured bainitic steels

Excellent combinations of strength and toughness can be obtained from high-carbon nanobainite, but this requires high levels of alloying and long heat treatments. This project will develop very fine bainitic – austenitic steels more cost effectively from leaner medium carbon alloys using shorter processing times via thermomechanical ausforming. Tensile strengths above 1600MPa are aimed at to give hot rolled steels with enhanced wear resistance combined with good toughness. Suitable compositions and processing parameters will be developed using modelling and physical simulation.

Designing and Enabling E-infrastructures for intensive Processing in a Hybrid DataCloud

The key concept proposed in the DEEP Hybrid DataCloud project is the need to support intensive computing techniques that require specialized HPC hardware, like GPUs or low latency interconnects, to explore very large datasets. A Hybrid Cloud approach enables the access to such resources that are not easily reachable by the researchers at the scale needed in the current EU e-infrastructure.

CAlcium Rechargeable BAttery Technology

We propose calcium based rechargeable batteries to be a FET helping to solve some of the Grand Challenges our modern society is facing: pollution, oil-dependency, and climate change. Today transportation contributes to >25% of the total CO2-emissions globally and while electrification of the sector is on-going still <1% of cars run on batteries – mainly due to issues of cost and driving ranges feasible (energy density limited).

Functional porous carbon materials derived from coal tar for energy and environmental applications

In order to increase the viability and competitiveness of European coal tar distillation plants, it is essential that optimum use of coal-derived liquids is made. Attaining this goal implies finding ways for the revalorization of liquids that are currently of low value and are not used in high-end applications (e.g., creosotes, phenolic oils and rejects obtained from the purification of high value coal tar fractions).

Large Area organic devices with Bar-assisted meniscus shearing technology

Organic-based devices have recently emerged in the market beginning to replace amorphous silicon in some applications, and also with great perspectives to find their place in a wide range of new applications that require low cost, flexibility and large area coverage. However, high and long-term performing organic semiconductors compatible with cheap solution-processed techniques are scare and thus, the achievement of processability and stability in organic devices is still a current challenge that must be overcome.

Novel roles of dimethylated Sulphur in Marine Microbial Interactions

Sulphur is an essential element for life that cycles rapidly in the pelagic ocean in the form of biogenic dimethylated compounds. Over three decades, dimethylated sulphur has been intensively investigated for its emission to the atmosphere and its suggested roles in returning sulphur to continents and in climate regulation.
