JAEPRE23-19: Real-time Monte Carlo simulations of clinical proton therapy treatments in highly parallel architectures

The medical physics instrumentation group at Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC), CSIC - Universidad de Valencia, invites appliactions for a PhD student to work on fast Monte Carlo simulations of clinical proton therapy treatments using GPUs and FPGAs. Prior experience in the field is welcome but not required. The position will be located in Valencia (Spain), with possible stays in relevant European proton therapy centers. It will include participation in a PhD program, monthly seminars, paid programming and training courses at CERN and other locations, and attendance to international conferences. Start: around autumn 2024 Gross salary: 23871.33Eur / year. Requirements: • Masters degree (or about to be finished), and Bachelor in Physics, Informatics, Mathematics Biomedical engineering, Computer Science or related disciplines. • Fluent understanding and communication in English. Recommended experience / skills: • Computer coding (C++, OpenMP, OpenCL, SYCL, CUDA, Python) and parallelism in multi-CPU, GPU and FPGA • Software development (Linux, bash, ssh, CMake, IDEs, git, GitHub/GitLab, Continuous integration) • Fast numerical techniques (Monte Carlo, variance reduction) and statistical analysis • Particle physics, radiation detectors background (ROOT, Geant4, Penelope, Latex) • Medical physics background (Gate, TOPAS, penH, MCsquare, MatRad, 3D Slicer, moqui, RayStation, dcmtk, amide)
