PRE2023-Upscaling of multiphase flow, transport and mechanical deformation-PID2022-137652NB-C41

This PhD position is part of the multidisciplinary project HydroPore II (PID2022-137652NB-C41) on coupled processes of multiphase flow, transport, and mechanical deformation in heterogeneous porous and fractured media. The thesis topic is modelling and upscaling of heat transport and deformation in fracture media. The candidate will enroll in the PhD program of the Environmental and Civil Engineering Department of the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC), with a 3 years training plan. The pre-doctoral researcher will receive training in flow and transport modellling in porous media, geomechanics, upscaling techniques, stochastic modeling, and computational methods. Furthermore, the candidate will be trained in numerical methods, multiphysics software such as OpenFoam, and software packages such as R and GNU scientific library, and acquire skills in experimental techniques and data analysis. Beside the skills directly related to the thesis topic, the candidate will acquire lifetime skills in effective communication, project management, technology transfer, paper writing, workshop organization for their professional future. The thesis will be supervised by Prof. Marco Dentz and Dr. Juan J. Hidalgo, and benefit from the expertise on multiphase flow modelling, flow and transport upscaling, pore-scale modelling, and geomechanics of the HydroPore II network: Technical University of Madrid, University of Barcelona, the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies and IDAEA.
