Enrique Trillas Ruiz
His field of research is fuzzy logic, a specialisation in which he was one of Spain’s pioneers. Between 1964 and 1985 he taught at the Catalonia Polytechnic University, where he held various teaching positions, including the posts of Deputy Director of the School of Architecture, Vice Dean of the Information Technology Faculty, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Organisation (1980-82) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for University Extension (1982-1983).
Since 1990 he has been professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in the IT Faculty at the Madrid Polytechnic University.
After completing his term as President of the CSIC he was appointed Director of the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (1989-95), and General Secretary for the National R&D Plan (1995-96). He has written numerous books and papers on scientific and technical topics, supervised 16 doctoral theses and more than 20 final year projects and dissertations. He is also a member of the editorial board of a number of journals and collections in the field.
He has been distinguished with a number of awards. Those in the field of fuzzy logic include: Pioneer Award from the European Society For Fuzzy Logic and Technologies (EUSFLAT, 1999), Fellow of the International Fuzzy System Association (IFSA) (1999), and Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award (2005).
He also holds a number of decorations, including: the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, "Grande Uffiziale" class (1986); the Great Cross of Aeronautical Merit (1991) and the Narcís Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit, awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (2000).
