He later did research at CERN and research institutions in France, Germany, Britain, Canada, United States, Denmark, Russia and Argentina.

His fields of specialisation are: Quantum Field Theory, Theory of Elementary Particles, Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Information Theory. His posts include Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Valencia (1983) and University of Barcelona (1986), and he also held various management responsibilities including: Head of Department (1987-1989), Deputy Vice-chancellor for Scientific and External Cooperation, (1990-1994 ), and Dean of the Faculty of Physics  (1996-1998).

He has participated in numerous policy advice and scientific evaluation activities including Personal advisor to the councillor for the Departament d'Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació (2000) and advice to the Congress of Deputies (PEN II).

Over the course of his career he has received a number of awards: Cañada-Blanch Award (1977), Eduard Fontseré Award (1980) and Royal Academy of Sciences Award (1988).

He holds the Cross of Alfonso X the Wise (1971) and the Commendation of the Order of Isabel the Catholic (2003). He is an academician of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of Barcelona (1990) and has an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Petersburg (1999).

Since 2005 he has been vice-chancellor of the University of Luxembourg.
